Swimmers - Elite Group Entrance Criteria - December 2011

 
Entrance criteria: For swimmers 8 and older.
  1. Have recorded B, B+, A, or A+ times and be committed to attaining Junior Olympic times in an event or multiple events.
  2. Swim 100 yards in all four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke & butterfly) including a 100IM or 200IM with proper breathing patterns.
  3. Have received coaches' invitation.
Practice schedule: Four times per week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday. Stretching for 5-10 minutes, 1:20 - 1:25 in water.
Recommended attendance: Four practices per week, 16 practices every 4 weeks.
Practice structure: Yardage is moderate to high intensity and technique oriented. Interval training is introduced, racing starts & turns are perfected, and kicking is emphasized representing 1/4 of the weekly yardage. Focus is on competing at a high level with good workout habits.
Practice Guidelines: 25% Instruction, 75% Training
  1. Trains in all 4 strokes, walls & starts;
  2. Interval training;
  3. Distance training with varying breathing patterns;
  4. Focus on individual stroke per swimmer strengths;
Event Focus: Individually focused with goal of being an accomplished swimmer - 200 Free, 100 Free, 50 Free, 200 IM, 100 IM, 100 Breast, 50 Breast, 100 Fly, 50 Fly, 100 Back, 50 Back .
Competition: Monthly Zone 3 Meets, Zone 3 Championships, Junior Olympics (JO) & Far Westerns (FW). Minimum 2 Long Course Meets per season.
Focus: Swimmer enters Swimmer enters 10-12 meets per year. Swimmers goal is to achieve qualifying times for Zone 3 Championships, JOs & FWs
  1. Commitment to being an elite competitive swimmer: good attitude, attendance, work ethic, setting an positive example for other swimmers;
  2. Goals - understand the importance of the process of goal setting, not just focusing on outcomes and achieving goals;
  3. Athletes will have one-on-one goal meetings with Coach every three months;
  4. Athletes practice good nutrition related to attaining peak performance;
  5. Swimmer thinks about sport outside of practice which influences decision making;
  6. Attends college dual meet or Santa Clara International Swim meet to see elite swimmers;
  7. Set a good example and be a role model for younger swimmers;
